Macao nowadays is like a huge construction site, perhaps one of the most active in this country, which consumes most of the world production of cement and steel. Since it was returned to Chinese domain in 1999, this former Portuguese possession is suffering a process of revitalization, added to that Beijing’s decision to keep on the permission for casinos in the territory while breaking a monopoly in this business that lasts for years, meant that the economy grew dramatically, overcoming Las Vegas in the volume of betting. And seems that the investments, especially in this sector, are not coming to an end.

Nevertheless, it is still possible to enjoy there, a more relaxed atmosphere, much less frenzied than at the other recentlyreturnedtoChinesedomain territory, Hong Kong. This side of Macao, that only time will tell whether it will resist development, was the one I’ve tried to register during 2006. It’s streets and alleys, squares, its people and customs, as well as its architecture, which still carries a strong Portuguese accent.

These images were obtained almost entirely at Macao’s Historic Center, fortunately declared World Heritage by UNESCO, which strengthens the hope that the modern Macao will respect and live with this rich and picturesque legacy.
